Taiwan Longan (龍眼): The Dragon-Eye Fruit That Rules August

If August in Taiwan had a fruit ambassador that got less press than mango but way more folklore, it would be longan — the dragon-eye fruit. Right now, from Kaohsiung to Taichung, farmers are shaking down heavy clusters of these brown-shelled little orbs, and every fruit stall from Yongkang Street to Tainan is piled high with them. Miss them in August and you’re waiting a whole year.

Why “Dragon Eye”?

Crack the papery brown shell (it snaps like a quail egg — no knife needed) and you’ll see why. A single glossy black seed sits at the center of translucent, pearly white flesh. Locals say it looks like a dragon’s eye staring back at you. The flesh is jelly-soft, aromatic, and tastes like a floral cousin of lychee — a little smokier, a little more grown-up.

Peak Season Is Right Now

Taiwan’s longan window is short: mid-July through early September, with the sweet spot in the first three weeks of August. The best come from Dongshan in Tainan — the volcanic red soil produces smaller fruits with a deeper honey note. If you see clusters still on the branch at the market, buy those — they stay fresh longer than the shelled ones sold by weight.

The Grandma-Approved Tonic

Taiwanese grandmothers have been drying longans into guiyuan (桂圓) for centuries. The wrinkled dark-brown dried flesh gets brewed into tea with red dates and goji berries — a traditional pick-me-up for anyone recovering from illness, giving birth, or just “feeling weak.” You’ll spot bags of dried longan in every herbal shop on Dihua Street. Toss a handful into your rice cooker with sticky rice for an instant winter dessert.

How to Eat Them Like a Local

Grab a bunch, sit on a stool at the night market, and pop them one after another — shells go on the ground, seeds discreetly into a napkin. Chase with an Aiwen mango for the full August fruit trifecta (the third being wax apple). This is why locals say Taiwan is the Kingdom of Fruits — and August is when the crown really shines.

The Takeaway

Longan is Taiwan’s most underrated summer fruit. It’s cheap (NT$80–120 for a big bunch), it’s peaking right now, and it’s the kind of thing you’ll only truly find in an Asian fruit market. Try them fresh this week. Your future self, sipping guiyuan tea in December, will thank you.
